Lumbar Epidural Steroid InjectionFor many, neck and shoulder pain is a debilitating form of chronic pain, resulting in the inability to enjoy many common activities of daily life. While there are many causes of this pain, some of the most common include suffering from a pinched nerve, a herniated disc, having poor posture, or as the result of an accident. While back, neck, and shoulder pain may come and go, if your pain is persistent and lasts longer than a couple months, it can be considered chronic. Most people who fall into this category have tried several different methods of pain management with little relief. If you struggle with ongoing lower back, neck, and shoulder pain due to the above conditions and have failed at other treatment options, you may be a candidate for lumbar epidural steroid injections. These injections are a prime form of chronic back and neck pain relief.

What do Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections Involve?

When you visit our office seeking relief for chronic neck and shoulder pain, our specialists will discuss your each and every unique symptom so that they can determine exactly where the pain is stemming from. If you’re a good candidate for the procedure, your pain management physician will prepare a steroid mixed with saline solution for injection into the epidural area. This area is home to the dural sac at the end of your spine, filled with small blood vessels and fat, surrounded by cerebral spinal fluid, and the spinal cord.

After isolating the source of your back and neck pain, the physician will clean and numb the area to receive the injection. A live x-ray is used to guide the needle and inject the steroid and saline solution into the appropriate spot. He or she will monitor you for approximately 15 minutes after the procedure to ensure that there are no complications. The entire procedure will take between 15 and 30 minutes at our own clinics and most patients experience pain relief no later than the end of the first week!
