What are the Causes of Chronic Headaches?

migraines and smoking in dallasChronic daily headaches fall into two categories: primary and non-primary. Primary chronic headaches don’t have an underlying cause. This can be frustrating for doctors and headache sufferers alike. Non-primary chronic headaches can be the caused by several conditions, including:

  • An infection such as meningitis
  • Intracranial pressure
  • Inflammation of the blood vessels
  • Having experienced a stroke
  • Having sustained a severe injury to the brain

Ironically, some medications used to treat chronic headaches can cause rebound headaches. If you take medicine to treat your headaches more than twice a week, your likelihood of this is increased.

Alternative Pain Management for Chronic Headaches

In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Botox for the treatment of migraine headaches. We offer Botox at all our clinics from Frisco to Arlington, TX, for patients whose previous treatment has failed by other therapies and who continue to have migraine headaches at least 15 days per month. The process involves inserting several small needles around the head and neck to dull the pain of intense headaches. Our doctors repeat the procedure approximately every 12 weeks, or until you experience significant relief.

Our doctors use a complementary approach to headache relief whenever possible. Alternative solutions include acupuncture and massage, dietary supplements, biofeedback, aerobic exercise, and learning relaxation techniques.
